NOOC Accomplishments
NOOC is a grass-roots, self-organized bunch of people who love Olys. Over the past years, different NOOC teams have come together to complete projects that support Olympia oyster conservation and restoration. Here is a list of highlights of our accomplishments:
RESTORATION DATABASE: Development of shared restoration database the has information on all Oly restoration projects ever conducted on the coast; Story Map that summarizes these projects; publication that synthesizes trends and lessons learned (funded by the NERR Science Collaborative).
CONSERVATION AQUACULTURE: Publication that evaluates all major estuaries with the range of Olys to determine where conservation aquaculture should be used or expanded (funded by SNAPP – The Science for Nature and People Partnership).
MAPPING: Interactive map that logs all Oly records (and Pacific oyster records within the Oly range) and estimates adult and larval network size and isolation; publication summarizing distribution and abundance trends (funded in part by Pew Charitable Trusts).
LIBRARY: Zotero library of Oly references available for anyone to use.
SYMPOSIA: Oly sessions held at five conferences 2018-2024 (Restore America’s Estuaries, Western Society of Naturalists, International Conference on Shellfish Restoration, and twice at the National Shellfisheries Association).
CONSISTENT MONITORING: NOOC developed consistent Oly recruitment monitoring methods and a shared database (funded in part by The Nature Conservancy).
ELEVATIONAL TOLERANCE: the upper intertidal limit of Olys (and Pacific oysters within their range) was evaluated by NOOC members across the range of the species, resulting in this publication (funded in part by The Nature Conservancy).
RESTORATION GUIDANCE: We generated this report on environmental conditions affecting Olympia oyster populations, with guidance for conservation and restoration.
DIY TOOL: We developed a tool for assessing the suitability of sites for Olympia oyster restoration.
